Computer Music

by Kazumichi Komatsu

Another one from the Tokyo based record label, FLAU. The bandcamp description reads:
Kazumichi Komatsu returns with his first album in four years, a boundary-pushing exploration born from the intersecting planes of his diverse projects, live performances, and DJ sets. Continuing from where his last release left off, this new body of work dismantles and reassembles the experiments formed in these intersections.
The album delves deeply into the embodiment of listening — an exploration of how sound interacts with the body, rendering its presence tangible. Throughout the album, multiple layers of processed voices weave in and out, creating a sonic tapestry that oscillates between distinct atmospheres and disintegrating noise that lies just beyond the boundaries of the tracks themselves.
Simultaneously, Komatsu introduces familiar yet recontextualized elements: guitar tones and preset-like rhythms that nod to shoegaze and improvisation. The repetition of simple, almost mundane melodies offers a meditation on parallel structures and the potential hidden within them. This repetition doesn’t just build, it bets on the possibilities that emerge from the cracks within it.
The album’s title gestures towards an infinite archive of past works, suggesting a hyper-saturated experience of nostalgia that transcends mere memory and points toward something more elusive — a generative engagement with what has come before.

SLUSHWAVE COLLAB OF THE YEAR.

My love affair with the genre known as "Slushwave" has been lovely. With more and more artists creating albums in the format and being put on fantastic record labels, it seems like there is no end in sight for this beautiful ambient genre. I am sad i missed out of this cassette.

I saw the artist desert sand feels warm at night preform at Electronicon 2023. It was awesome and he played the keytar. I had met him one year prior at the Tape Swap in brooklyn 2022, where he graciously signed a good chunk of my cassette J-cards. (I am a collector of his music on cassette. As of this post i have 30+ cassettes from this artist) He was a friendly soul and a fantastic live preformer.

from the bandcamp:
Hiraeth Records present 鹿児島 砂漠 (Kagoshima Desert), a sonic journey and collaborative release by popular artist desert sand feels warm at night and elusive producer ⦓🍊⦔ タンジェリン, fit with swirling tracks decorated with fine shimmering textures.

野外博物館

by VANITAS命死

I love this album, and I would love to see it on cassette one day. This artist is very consistent, and has posted frequently throughout the year. But this album from January 1st has been on replay when i need my modern slushwave fix. Very impressive sample-free work. And i LOVE the album art, very elusive and fuzzy and perfect for the project. If you listen to only one album from this list let it be this one.

I love the new direction Vitesse X is going with this sound.

I saw Vitesse X preform on 8/20/22 on the Main Stage of the Knockdown center as opener for the Electronicon 3 music festival. It was amazing, and i felt bad for the hundreds of people who were slowly coming in during or after her set and missed it. I had the opportunity to meet her the day before at the community ran "tape swap" and she was very kind. Strange to think I would have to wait over 2 years for another album from her.

The following is copy and paste from the bandcamp description:
Vitesse X’s sophomore album This Infinite is about more than just escape. Vitesse X’s debut, 2022’s Us Ephemeral, was a tribute to the spiritual vibrations of the club, influenced by ‘90s rave, ambient techno, and Kraftwerk’s Tour de France. But before her time exploring the rhythms of nightlife, though, Vitesse X spent years playing in indie bands in her hometown of New York City. This Infinite weaves the slinking energy of her debut with these scrappy, livewire beginnings. The record is an exercise in anti-perfectionism, a sort of musical purging for the artist that she refers to as a “somatic release.” While writing, she pursued ideas without judging herself too harshly, leaving the songs rough around the edges and foregrounding confessional lyrics. This shift in mindset transported Vitesse X into a flow state, resulting in a powerful collection of wistful and sanguine dream-pop songs—always openhearted and forever unraveling. For Vitesse X, the album encourages the listener to free themselves from ego, as she aims to do. “It’s about trusting my gut,” says Vitesse X. “It feels like a weight was lifted. It says what it needs to say.” Pushing past injustice, the oppressiveness of a capitalist society, rage, and heartbreak, the record captures Vitesse X in the midst of release. Through the act of creation, she argues on This Infinite, we can make a change, both in ourselves and in the world.

Dated New Aesthetic

by Windows96

Yes Da Da Da

by Windows96

Enchanting this list with 3 albums by Windows96. All released throughout this year and all equally fantastic synthwave pieces. I would not be surprised if this artist releases another album this year. Very consistent, always beautiful and interesting. This artist from Brazil should come tour the United States.

NEXT ON THIS LIST:

Perseids

by somesurprises

i purchased this album on cd before having ever heard the music. this is, of course, due to the fantastic internet presence of the residing label DOOM TRIP RECORDS. They are active on twitter and often post free bandcamp codes for their albums, or sometimes even large discounts on merch. This is how i found myself ordering a cd for a band i had never heard before. But i put my trust in the doom trip, and i was rewarded. Beautiful dreamy psychedelic guitars and ethereal vocals. This cd lives in my car and gets played often.

I will now copy and paste from the bandcamp description:

The return of somesurprises takes the form of Perseids, a full length LP, and their first new music in 5 years. More than just a memorable record, it is unquestionably the band’s finest moment. Led by founding member Natasha El-Sergany, Perseids is not a reinvention of the group’s sound, it is the perfecting of it.

Within seconds of album opener “Be Reasonable,” El-Sergany’s rich, commanding vocal arrives, galactic in size and unearthly in nature. Longtime fans of the project have found themselves entranced by her delivery, as it is a voice that is not only heard but one that seems to inhabit you. The album’s first track feels almost like an incantation as much as a song, and one gets the impression that she may be making a plea to the entire world with it.

Yet even with El-Sergany’s vocals at center stage, the band's instrumentalists don't hold back. Regardless of tempo or feel, the rhythm section is perpetually locked in and the guitar leads ring out energetically. Longtime member Josh Medina compliments the songs with tasteful applications of guitar and synth, while bassist Laura Seniow and drummer Nico Sophiea carry things with deceptively complex grooves. Also featured are two very special guests, composer Jessika Kenney (Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room) and Lori Goldston (Nirvana, Earth) who supply vital contributions to the album.

The Seattle band captures dynamics on these recordings that are frequently missing in contemporary rock, with songs like “Bodymind” and “Why I Stay” featuring giant swells of sound. But just as often as they know when to dial things up, they similarly know when to slow things down. Tracks like the hazy “Snakes and Ladders” and the quietly joyous “(Untitled)” provide the album with natural breathing space between its grander gestures.

It’s a record packed with striking moments, like the unforgettable poem recitation by Jessika Kenney on the album’s title track. The poem, interpreted by Kenney from the original by Hafez, describes the image of meteors in Islamic spiritual tradition, which symbolize the striking down of demons from the heavens in the same way that poetry and art have the power to transform our wounds and struggles into new, stronger narratives. Though written as an ode to this power, Perseids may itself succeed in summoning meteors of its own.

Keen ears might hear traces of Ash Ra Tempel, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, My Bloody Valentine, Grouper, Mazzy Star, or even Amon Düül II in the music, but as quickly as the familiar vibes appear, they vanish, dissolving into the singular sound that the band has crafted for themselves. While there are surely elements of shoegaze, psych, and dreampop here, somesurprises are less concerned with genre. With songs this pure, the identification of specific styles becomes irrelevant. Indeed, they are ultimately just drops in the ocean of somesurprises’ sound.

This is the record you’ve been waiting for.

“If the wounds of time’s wheel have drained your heart of life,
Like Hafez, into the demon of grief, throw the shooting star’s arrow.”

ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FROM 2024

"vaporwave always seems to invite some sort of philosophical reading but that’s always going to be exactly missing the point, it’s fantasy music, it’s anti rational, it’s a feeling not an idea. trying to pin it down is a little bit of violence against the freedom it’s giving"

-FM Skyline,
via Twitter

I love that quote from FM Skizzy twitter account. His synthwave/vapor/fantasy blend has always been perfect for long drives or studying. It is also fantastic when preformed live, which i have had the pleasure of seeing two times so far in my life.

the album is great. goes without saying, i mean its on the list!! blog spot dot com

This was at Electronicon August 2023, at the Knockdown Center. Electronicon 2023 had a fantastic lineup and i feel so blessed that i was able to attend it. especially since it seems like the label, 100PercentElectronica, isn't doing them anymore.

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS BLOG. I MADE IT FOR YOU. <3

THE FOLLOWING ALBUM HELPED MAKE 2O24 BETTER:

SKYTRAX/CAVETRAX

by Webelotrax (COMPILATION ALBUM)

Having been affiliated with Webelotrax in the past, I was sent an email with a discount code for the new 2xCD merch. The music was not released yet, but I knew it would be worth it. especially to support this small, Colorado Springs based music label. Both sides of the album are full of underground techno and experimental electronic music. Worth every penny, or at least worth a listen.

It looks like they still have CD's available, and for only $6 before shipping. I can vouge that the product is high quality and has a spot in my vaporwave/vapor-adjacent CD Collection.

DATAGIRL - Hello World

the most anticipated album of all time? and it absolutely lived up to the hype
Released September 6, 2024

check out the awesome website for HYPERFOCUS label. Created by Datagirl and her husband nanoshrine, both talented artists. CD"s are available on the website as well as some limited merch.

I first heard DATAGIRL when she preformed live at the tape swap in Brooklyn, August 2022. I have seen her preform live a total of 3 times now, all were fantastic.

Also worth noting, my buddy jordan took this photo

This collection of Minecraft covers are just awesome. They printed cassettes and CD's, which were sold out by the time i had discovered the album. This happens often with those small batch releases of hidden gems.

Grocery Store Sunset

by Tupperwave

Released January 5, 2024

Tupperwave is awesome. A new album from Tupperwave is always a treat. If you missed this album, let this be your sign to listen to it now. This is authentic vaporwave/future funk/electronic chillwave from Brisbane, Australia

Tupperwave almost toured the United States, and even started planning it on his discord server. Unfortunatly those plans were cancelled and the tour is still yet to come. If he makes it in my general area, i will be in the front row.

I might make a separate post about my tupperwave cassette collection one day, i have a few. This type of music sounds perfect on cassette tape. No cassette release for this album yet ( unless i missesd it? ) Would be COOL

Later, in august, Tupperwave released another album,

VaporLoops Vol.3 which is jazzy, and funky, and equally badass. Tupperwave does not disappoint. thats why i put his merch sticker on my car for all to see!

FiLo

by Hotel Pools

i met hotel pools first at Electronicon NY 2023, then again at Flamingofest LA 2023. He is talented and a great live artist. It is synthwave. stereotypical synthwave, with regular synthwave single-word song titles. Regardless, its worth a listen or 3. All the merch sold out ( as it always does with this legendary artist )
Hotel Pools deserves all the love

Deepfake Fantasy

by Enraile

one of the albums of all time

really good chaotic listen. its crazy, DDS inspired electronic psychedelic dance-noise

I have listened to it a few times all the way through. two times the day it came out, because i was at work all day and one time wasnt enough.

my favorite track is the last track on the album, Eco Pool. its like the toy at the bottom of the cereal box.

Ive met Enraile a few times at a few different shows, and had the pleasure of seeing him preform at Electronicon 2023. please check out this album if you are prepared for some bleeps and bloops.

listen to tha homies new album. Me and David(Limousine) have partied multiple times at different venues around the united states. He is a very kind person and his music is super cool. Known for his vaporwave HIT quesadilla daddy and his work with wrestling related vapor, this album is full of tropical, tourism-themed eccojams. Great work, available on cassette, what more could i ask for? I only hope that i can party with the man again sometime soon, its been too long!

as of this post, cassettes still available

I own a lot of different merch items from Limousine, the most interesting being a signed condom with the art for Wrestling ☯ Wave on it. ( its expired)

a third memory haze album has been released. Described as "the final chapter.." on twitter

i listened to it at 1am because obviously. i was trying to fall asleep and i put this on and closed my eyes. when the album finished, i had to go back and revisit the first 2 albums. such a great work.
